SONGKHLA, Thailand – A 29-year-old man stabbed his mother’s new partner at least 10 times before shooting him dead with his own handgun on Sunday night, in a violent confrontation reportedly fueled by jealousy and family tensions.

Muang Songkhla police were alerted to the events at a house on Klinprapai Road in Khao Rup Chang subdistrict, Muang district, around 8:35 PM on August 10. At the scene, they found Winai Hirankul, 53, lying dead outside the house with multiple wounds caused by a sharp weapon and several gunshot wounds. The suspect, identified as Peerapol Phetkaew, 29, fled the scene and remained at large.

Police said relatives told them that Peerapol’s mother, a hairdresser, had been in a relationship with the victim for some time, which had reportedly caused tension between the two men. Peerapol feared his mother would no longer look after her own home and family, and the two men had reportedly argued several times over the relationship. Relatives said Peerapol had confronted Winai, accusing him of becoming involved with his mother and leaving her little time to care for her own family.

Earlier that day, relatives reportedly saw Peerapol sitting and sharpening a knife. Later, Winai arrived at the house, followed by Peerapol, who arrived on a motorcycle with a friend. The two men reportedly argued and then began brawling. When Winai turned away, Peerapol allegedly attacked him with a knife, stabbing and slashing him repeatedly, including a severe wound to his neck. It is alleged Peerapol then took Winai’s .38 calibre handgun from the man’s waistband and fired three or four shots at him before fleeing.

Relatives told police that Winai had recently expressed a feeling that something bad might happen and had therefore started carrying the firearm. A security camera at a house opposite captured the confrontation. It reportedly showed the two men grappling before falling to the ground, after which Peerapol allegedly stabbed Winai at least 10 times with a pointed knife. The footage also recorded the screams of Peerapol’s mother during the attack.

Police believed Peerapol may still be in the area and sought a court warrant for his arrest. Authorities have urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward as the investigation continues, with additional charges pending once the suspect is apprehended. The case has highlighted concerns over domestic violence and the prevalence of firearms in private hands, as police work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
